NYC’s Microgrid Energizes Marcus Garvey Village
This month we commissioned a first-of-its-kind microgrid at Marcus Garvey Village, a mixed-income 625-unit apartment complex in Brooklyn. Among major milestones for the project: It’s the city’s first renewable-energy-plus-storage microgrid in an affordable housing development, and the first deployed under Con Edison’s Brooklyn-Queens Demand Management Program (BQDM).
Demand Energy’s Distributed Energy Network Optimization System (DEN.OS™) software platform is optimizing how these microgrid resources interact and perform in conjunction with the electrical grid.
The system will manage renewable energy production and storage to reduce power consumption and save money through demand charge reduction. It will also provide resiliency during an outage, lower operational costs, deliver essential load relief for Con Edison, and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Thanks to our many partners on the project: Marcus Garvey Village owners L+M Development Partners; Bright Power; Bloom Energy; New York City Energy Efficiency Corporation (NYCEEC); GridMarket; and Con Edison. A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in June.

At the heart of the Marcus Garvey Village microgrid is a 300 kW / 1.2 MWh lithium-ion battery array – the first to be approved for a behind-the-meter commercial/industrial building in NYC. Demand Energy worked closely with city fire officials and the Department of Buildings to earn their approvals and achieve this milestone in urban storage deployment. Li-on technology offers numerous advantages over lead-acid: longer life, better performance, smaller footprint and improved economics. Read Story >

We’re proud to be involved with the world’s most electrifying racing competition: the world championship of electric cars, Formula E. Enel, along with newly acquired Demand Energy, will deploy a system to support the recharging infrastructures of race vehicles during the Brooklyn ePrix on July 15 and 16. These races will be the first FIA motorsports events to take place in New York City in modern history. Throughout the 2016-17 season, Enel is powering vehicles and circuit spaces with renewable energy, transforming the races into totally CO2-neutral events. Read Story >
